Titanium Ti-6Al-4V

Properties of titanium: strength, lightness and technology

Titanium Ti-6AL-4V Features

Titanium and its alloys currently represent the metals with the best mechanical strength-to-weight ratio. In recent years, their applications have been steadily growing, although global titanium production remains limited compared to steel. Currently, titanium is used primarily in the chemical, offshore, aerospace, automotive, and biomedical sectors.

These materials are chosen for their unique characteristics: high mechanical strength, low density, excellent corrosion resistance in marine and chemical environments, biocompatibility, and excellent aesthetic properties. However, the high cost of the raw material and processing limits titanium’s use to sectors where its specific properties are essential and justify higher investments.

MIM: the technology for titanium

Metal Injection Molding (MIM) is a net-shape technology that minimizes material waste and keeps production costs low, especially for medium- to large-scale batches. This makes it particularly suitable for processing titanium and its alloys, opening up new possibilities for using this material in various sectors.

Traditional machining of titanium using machine tools is very expensive due to the slow processing speed and high tool costs. Consequently, components made with this technology often have simple geometries that are not always optimized for the required functionality.

On the contrary, MIM allows you to obtain components with complex geometries in shorter times and at lower costs, without compromising quality.

Thanks to a collaboration with the University of Trento, Silcon Plastic Srl is able to process the titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V via MIM, guaranteeing excellent mechanical properties.

The table below contains the properties of Ti6-Al4V alloy processed by MIM in the facilities of Silcon Plastic Ltd.
